About Lisa

My path into child therapy started in general medicine whilst working for the NHS. Seeing first-hand the effects of mental ill-health on an individual and their family led me to retrain in 2010. Since then I have worked as an outreach team member with Samaritans supporting young people with suicidal tendencies and obtained a degree in psychology at Winchester University.  In the last six years I have worked in both primary and secondary special education schools, working with children diagnosed with a range of complex needs from behavioural, emotional and social difficulties to autism spectrum disorder. After completing my degree I moved into child psychotherapy obtaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Play Therapy from Leeds Beckett University.

My work in schools not only involves consultation and assessment of children’s mental health but also advising management, teachers and assistants. In June of this year I trained as a Filial Coach. This allows me to work with parents or carers to build the bond with their children through play and involves teaching basic child-centred, non-directive play skills.

For the last two years I have been involved in drumming groups in my local area and also seen the benefits drumming can bring to children with behavioural and emotional difficulties.  For my MA research in Practice Based Therapy I am currently examining the effectiveness of drumming groups to reduce school based anxiety. This came about after observing pupils before sitting their SATs exams. The aim of the groups is to reduce test-based anxiety through the use of music, as a form of expression. The intervention offers pupils a secure space for exploration and growth and unites children suffering from anxiety.

I work in the Hampshire, Surrey and West Berkshire area providing therapeutic interventions, consultations and assessments and also have private rooms in Basingstoke and Farnham.
